Profile
Kogakuin University was founded in 1887 as a two-year college aimed at nurturing technologists with practical skills. Responding to the increasing needs for qualified engineers, it was converted in 1949 to a modern four-year university specializing in engineering education. Over the past 118 years we have been concentrating on engineering education, and have, to date, sent out approximately a hundred thousand graduates to every sector of industry. We are very proud of our graduates who are contributing to the well-being of mankind and acting as a driving force in industrial development both here and abroad. About 6,000 students are currently enrolled in programs offered by twelve Departments that cover the major disciplines of engineering; i.e. mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, electric & information engineering and architecture. 220 full-time Faculty and 470 part-time lecturers are responsible for the education and research activities of our undergraduate and graduate programs. In 2002, one of our programs, "Global Engineering Program", was accredited by the "Japan Accreditation Board for Engineering Education, JABEE"; thus, acknowledging that it has achieved an International equivalency in its engineering education program that it develops engineers whose standards are measured under the highest criteria. This is one of the first three accredited programs, the other two being at national universities, authorized by JABEE.

Environment
Kogakuin has two campuses, one in Hachioji another in Shinjuku. Freshmen and sophomores except those who belong to the Faculty of Informatics attend classes at our campus in Hachioji, a University town where more than twenty universities are located on forest rich Tama-Hills in the western suburb of Tokyo. The lush, natural surroundings of this spacious campus afford students an ideal environment in which they can concentrate on their studies and participate in diverse sports activities. The campus includes a full range of educational and research facilities in addition to sports facilities. Our Shinjuku Technology Campus, or "S-Tech", lies in the center of Shinjuku-New Metropolis, just two blocks to Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office building. The 29-story's main building is regarded as an "intelligent campus", with the most advanced equipment in information processing. At the Shinjuku campus there are specialty courses for junior and senior students in all departments in the day programs, all courses in each department in the evening program and lectures in the Graduate School. Open to the public, the campus also sponsors a variety of international conferences, academic forums and symposiums. The Shinjuku and Hachioji campuses are linked by an intra-university computer network that can be freely accessed from terminals within the two campuses.
