Soka University was founded in 1971 by Dr. Daisaku Ikeda, president of Soka Gakkai International. The founding principles of the university are; Be the highest seat of learning for humanistic education; Be the cradle of a new culture; Be a fortress for the peace of humankind. Soka University's mission is to foster capable people with: 1. A sound and unique individual character; 2. Excellent judgment based on accumulated knowledge; 3. Creativity and the ability to apply their intelligence to practical matters; 4. Good health and a strong sense of purpose; and 5. A keen international perspective. Soka University is undertaking educational reforms to better meet these goals. The uniqueness of the university lies in its delivery of an ideal academic environment amid the green hills of Musashino. In its endeavor to develop capable individuals with a high moral standard, the university provides instruction in an atmosphere conducive to learning. The university limits class size to approximately fifty students for ordinary lectures and much smaller groups for foreign language classes. Seminars average fifteen students, discussions are conducted in small groups, and one-to-one instruction is also provided. |

| The university will enrich its exchange programs and make a smooth transfer of credit between Soka University and the host university. It will eventually have three-month, six month, and full-year programs of study abroad. It also looks forward to offering opportunities for short term language programs, cultural exchanges, and internship programs as well as the academic and educational exchanges that it currently promotes with the foreign universities with which it has agreements. |

Activities |
Soka University Festival is organized and run by students every year. It is a major event in the university calender. Moreover, students enjoy extracurricular activities throughout the year. The extracurricular activities association aims to strengthen the ties amongst students through extra curricular activities in order to develop students' minds and bodeis. The association consists of 111 groups in three areas-sports, academics, and arts. |

Students |
| Exchange students receive the benefit of exemption from tuition and dormitory fees in addition to scholarships, in accordance with the agreement between Soka University and the student's home university. The university also has its own sholarships for both undergraduate and graduate students and offers them to many international students. It has dormitories for exchange students and for international students who enroll in the program of the Institute of the Japanese Language. It has moreover established an International Exchange Center, where international students can obtain information about visas. |

| Institute of the Japanese Language was established in 1976 with two objectives. One is to provide international students who wish to enroll in the undergraduage or postgraduate program of Soka University with the Japanese language skills needed to understand Japanese medium lectures. The other objective is to offer courses of Japanese language and culture to those internatinal students who are on exchange programs. Effective language teaching methods are implemented in classes with an average size of ten students and are suported by state-of-the^art audio-visual facilities. Classes consist of students from many countries of Asia, America, Europe, and other parts of the world. The istitute's ultimage goal is to foster capable individuals who can contribute to cultural exchanges between Japan and their home country. |
