Overseas university Xi’an Jiaotong University
Location Xi’an, China
Seminar period Oct.11 – Oct.20, 2007
No. of participants Prefectural University of Hiroshima: 6 faculty members, 29 students
Xi’an Jiaotong University: 2 faculty members, 10 students
Seminar detail Ancient cultures from eastern Asia, including China, were brought to Japan by “the passage through the sea.” These Asian cultures that reached Kyushu, the westernmost part of Japan, then traveled through the Seto Inland Sea to the current Kinki region, once the political center of Japan, greatly contributing to the formation and development of Japanese cultures in the areas.
This seminar was focused on the histories and cultures of coastal regions of Hiroshima Prefecture, located in the center of the inland sea, particularly such areas as Miyajima (Hatsukaichi City), Tomo (Fukuyama City), and Onomichi that long prospered as major port towns in the inland sea. Special attention was paid to the fusion of Japanese and Chinese cultures, explained in lectures and via on-site learning. Through this seminar and by experiencing Japanese cultures first-hand, those students from Xi’an Jiaotong University promoted exchanges with Prefectural University of Hiroshima students and local residents.
The seminar was made up of the following: (1) Lecture, (2) On-site study (Miyajima, Tomo/Fukuyama, Onomichi), (3) Japanese culture experience, and (4) Students exchanges. The lecture section included students from both universities sitting together in regular classes and presentation of master’s dissertations by graduate students. Prefectural University of Hiroshima students accompanied their Chinese counterparts in the on-site study. The Japanese culture experience had been planned by students who practice the tea ceremony and koto Japanese zither music. As a whole, the seminar was successful in deepening the mutual understanding of the students of both universities.
