[From the Editor]
The rays of sunlight already have a mid-summery glitter and shine as they peep through the clouds of the rainy season.
Haruki Murakami's new novel "1Q84" has sold over one million copies in Japan, becoming a best seller. The Japanese are said to read too much foreign literature, but Murakami is a Japanese author whose books are read worldwide. You may have read his work too, since it has been translated into more than 40 languages including English, Chinese, Korean and Russian.
"1Q84" is his first novel in seven years. I grabbed a copy that one of my family members had bought, and started reading it. Whereas many of Murakami's early novels centered on the theme of love and portrayed the sadness and vulnerable inner feelings of youths, the new story seems to be driving at a more social and moral issue. It takes place in a fantasy world typical to Murakami's work, in a time slightly unlike the actual year 1984 (number nine in Japanese is pronounced like the letter Q). I'm so absorbed in the captivating plot that I finished half the book before I knew it. My hand seems to be turning the pages quickly in anticipation of the conclusion that waits ahead.
Have you enjoyed the 13th issue of our eNewsletter?
Opinions and ideas as well as memories and photos of your days in Japan are welcome. We would be delighted to hear any feedback from you!
The 14th issue of the newsletter is scheduled to issue on Sep 10, 2009.
Don’t miss it!
