[From the Editor]
Do you have any favorite books?
I myself prefer suspense novels so that I can experience a thrill that I can't get from everyday life. But these days television and movies have been taking up so much of my time, that I have been spending significantly less time reading.
Recently, Japanese people of all age groups have been shifting away from reading, raising concerns over the decline in their language abilities.
Following the Programme for International Student Assessment conducted by the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development), the decline in reading proficiency among Japanese high school students also became a topic of discussion.
To improve the situation, the Japanese government has designated 2010 as the “National Year of Reading,” and is encouraging its citizens to find more opportunities to read.
I am also planning to cut down on my television watching this year and find time to read every day, even if it is only a little each time.
Apparently, when you not only read but also write, your mind becomes even more active.
Now that you have read up to this part of the Japan Alumni eNews, haven’t you started to feel like you want to write about your memories of studying in Japan, or some thoughts on this email newsletter?
Based on your feedback, we will try to make this email newsletter more entertaining, so please do send us your thoughts.
We look forward to your continuing support and interest as a reader of Japan Alumni eNews this year as well!
Have you enjoyed the 16th issue of our eNewsletter?
Opinions and ideas as well as memories and photos of your days in Japan are welcome. We would be delighted to hear any feedback from you!
