Period          February 26, 2007 ~ March 3, 2007 (6days)
Institution          Hanoi University of Technology (Vietnam)
Field of Research Guidance      Flavor Chemistry
Summary of Research Guidance Dr. Minh Tu is involved in education and research as a lecturer at her old school, Hanoi University of Technology. Also as a chief administrator of a chromatography center, a joint facility, of the university, she is actively involved in maintenance management of equipments, analysis for internal purposes, as well as her own flavor research. In Vietnam, however, availability and repair services of chemicals and equipment parts are far from satisfactory level, which is different from Japan. During the guidance conducted, high emphases were placed on providing consumable parts and transferring maintenance techniques, so that research can be carried out smoothly. At the same time, guidance was given to teachers and graduate students regarding flavor researches, fulfilling the purpose of the program.
The result and comments by Former International student During the Research Guidance, thanks to Professor SAWAMURA I have experienced on GC/O setting and using SPME, new technique of flavor analysis in our laboratory condition. Many important chromatography gears and spare parts are obtained for the Center of Education and Development of Chromatography, HUT through this Research Guidance: Personal computer, capillary column, micro-syringe, silicone septum, sealing resin, etc. New information on flavor research of citrus has been presented and discussed. Professional guidance for my continuing flavor research has been done.

The program of Research Guidance has helped my research can be continued on term of GC/O analysis. This is a good follow-up program, which helps former international students in Japan exchanging new technique and technology, keeping in touch with the previous studies and the academic advisors. Moreover, it also encourage us on continuous research and development.

<Study in Japan>

Research advisor's Impressions for the former International student while studying in Japan and communication after studying in Japan With introduction of market economy, Vietnam has shown rapid economic development. Hanoi University of Technology celebrated its 50th anniversary in October 2006. The university is one of the most important universities in Vietnam to develop human resources who are good at science and technological fields and form parts of the foundation of country development. At present, food industry in Vietnam is marking the beginning of significant development, and domestic universities and businesses are paying close attention to Dr. Minh Tu as a rare food flavor expert. Dr. Minh Tu is fluent in Vietnamese, English, French, Russian, Bulgarian, and Japanese even when she was in Japan. Therefore, during her stay in Japan, she has made numerous presentations at international conferences regarding flavors. She plays an important role to host international symposiums and provides lectures in French. In order to further deepen exchanges with Hanoi University of Technology in education and in research, Dr. Minh Tu will play the key role. As she understands Japanese culture, history and custom and has a good sense of balance, she will surely make great contribution to promote friendship between Japan and Vietnam.

<Follow-up Research Guidance>

Period          December 17, 2006 ~ December 26, 2006 (10days)
Institution          Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University (P. R. China)
Field of Research Guidance      creative of urushi-arts and conservation
Summary of Research Guidance There is a lacquer technique introduced from China to Japan in 8 century. No artist in China releases his/her work mainly using this technique. Nor any university in China trains practical skills of this technique. Laborers in Ming and Qing period China came to Japan to learn Makie technique, developed in Japan in 8 century, but no record shows that the technique spread throughout China. During the program, I have given practical lessons of these two techniques as well as raden (mother-of-pearl inlay) and rankaku (eggshell) techniques. I felt the importance of history to teach the techniques after 1200 years since they were first introduced from China to Japan. It was unexpected but delighted to learn that all the students were impressed by the hearts, wisdom, and sensibility of Japanese to have kept the tradition.
Former International student's general impression and opinion about the Follow-up Research Guidance I want to express my sincere appreciation to have been given the support to this program. There will be no friendship between China and Japan unless we pass along the relationship to younger generations. I genuinely hope opportunities will be provided to future university students to learn and understand Japanese culture. Variety of supports from Japan, I hope, will be even wider. As China and Japan are neighboring countries, I wish we could further develop Oriental culture together.

<Study in Japan>

Research advisor's Impressions for the former International student while studying in Japan and communication after studying in Japan Mr. Zhou Jian Shi temporarily left his teaching career at his university in China and his family behind to study in Japan. He had countless difficulties to continue his study. After earning two master's degrees, however, he was recalled as one of graduates who have a good record outside China. This was such a delight for both Mr. Zhou Jian Shi and Tokyo National University of Fine Arts & Music as this program was given more meaning.
During his stay in Japan, I was invited as a guest to annual meeting of Chinese Professionals in Japan and its party to talk about "Arts communication has no border", JASSO international student support programs, and international communication projects.
As for JASSO, I believe building networks among former international students is an urgent business, because people around the network will be very useful when JASSO bears responsibility of promoting cultural and artistic communication. It is high time to realize ever-lasting relationship between teachers and students, as teaching international students continues even after they leave the university

<Follow-up Research Guidance>

Period          December 5, 2006 ~ December 14, 2006 (10days)
Institution          Andalas University(Indonesia)
Field of Research Guidance      Environmental Soil Science
Summary of Research Guidance 1) Research Guidance to the former international student: Using "sustainable soil resource use" as key words, I have drawn a blue print of specific research activities for 3 years and taught the student how to investigate, collect samples, analyze, and analyze data. However, instructions I provided are not complete. Therefore, I will keep providing instructions through e-mails. 2) Promoting inter-university communication and improving research cooperation: Talks with president, vice-president, Agronomy Department dean, etc. of Andalas University, and seminars at the Department of Agronomy enabled me to acquire agreement for cooperation from the university to improve research works which I and the former international student have been working on. 3) Cooperation to student education: Through 2 special lectures for post-graduate and under-graduate students, I stimulated the attendants and raised their motivation towards their study and research.
Former International student's general impression and opinion about the Follow-up Research Guidance I am very happy to have such kind program so I could get a new information about soil research design and method. Through out this program I might also received some soil research equipment (Soil Munshel Color Chart) that we always use for soil sampling. Those are very useful to develop my research activities. Beside that I have enough time to discuss how to develop the research program on soil science perspective in relation to the environment. In order to growth up my research ability for the future, I wish JASSO will be invited me to Shimane University for doing a research and develop a scientific research.

<Study in Japan>

Research advisor's Impressions for the former International student while studying in Japan and communication after studying in Japan Mr. Hermansah came to Japan with his family, studied and researched at Shimane University. While in Japan, in addition to own research, he also led the international students' organization of the university and was actively involved in community programs. After his return, we kept our communication through e-mails, etc. and I visit his university every year to help his research activities. As he is a hard worker, has a good personality and is trusted by many people, he assumed vice manager of Rural Development Center immediately after his return. As a result, he does not have ample time to spend for his own research, but always manages to spare time for my every visit to conduct a field survey with me. In Indonesia, lack of resource and information for research prevents most of former foreign students who had earned doctoral or master degrees at universities outside Indonesia from continuing their research. There is so much a person can do, but I am going to do my best to support Mr. Hermansah.
