Institution          Mahasarakham University (Thailand)
Field of Research Guidance      Ornamental Plant Breeding
Research equipments SHIMAZU Digital Micro Scope, DMBA 300, Motic Image Assembly Set
Research instruction details and results We had overall discussions about Dr. Kriangsuk’s research on Floriculture and decided on his research plan. Regarding disease resistant rose breeding, which he was studying those days, we decided that he would make a presentation at the International Horticultural Congress in fiscal year 2009. As for the theme of our next joint research project, we decided on an action plan to further develop the research on ornamental curcuma breeding on which he is still continuing his study. The research instrument we took with us was remarkably useful to effectively conduct micromanipulation, which is necessary for verifying the applicability of the crossing technique.
The result and comments by Former International student It is considerably indebted to JASSO for the promotion and improvement such collaborate research activities for former international student in Japan. The results would be encouraging the mutual understanding between both countries. Ornamental curcuma breeding would be done in the next project for us.

<Study in Japan>

Research advisor's Impressions for the former International student while studying in Japan and communication after studying in Japan Through the conversation with his colleagues and staff, it was obvious to me that he was trusted and loved very much. Instructions he gave to research assistants were accurate, which I thought was a good result of his education in Japan. Furthermore, his lecture on flower design is known as a very popular course which as many as five hundred students have registered to take. He went back to Thailand when it was very difficult to find job but he was lucky to gain a university teaching position. Perhaps it was because he is a person of talent and good character, but I could see that what he had experienced in Japan also helped him.

Research advisor / Faculty of Sciences Professor YUMOTO Kiyohumi
Former international student / Mr. La Ode Muhammad Musafar Kilowasid (Indonesia)

Prof. Yumoto (Left) and Mr. Musafar (Right)

<Profile (Former international student)>

Name La Ode Muhammad Musafar Kilowasid
Nationality Indonesia
Educational Background in Japan April, 2002 ~  March, 2004
Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, Graduate School of Sciences, Kyushu University (Master)
Present Institution / Status Indonesian National Institute of Aeronautic and Space / Researcher

<Follow-up Research Guidance>

Period          February 19 ~ 28, 2008 (10days)
Institution          Indonesian National Institute of Aeronautic and Space (Indonesia)
Field of Research Guidance      Space and Earth Electromagnetism / Space Weather
Research equipments Notebook computer (Prime Note Galleria JS)
Research instruction details and results The goal we set this time was to make it possible for Mr. Musafar to conduct data processing by himself through the training sessions on MAGDAS(MAGnetic Data Acquisition System) in general. The institute he belongs to and our laboratory are now conducting cooperative observation utilizing MAGDAS. The system, MAGDAS, represents state-of-the art IT technology, with which it is possible to collect geomagnetic observation data in a real-time manner. Through the research instruction program this time we have been able to cultivate human resources in Indonesia capable of transferring and collecting data on a real time basis. This is a golden opportunity for younger researchers in developing countries to become able to exercise leadership in the field of geomagnetic observation. From now on, Mr. Musafar will continue conducting data processing on his own and will become able to release research results and data of his own to the world for himself. Moreover, Japan Student Services Organization has presented him with a new notebook computer which he can use for his collecting observation data in a real-time manner and analyzing them. This I believe was exactly the best timing for him to have the machine because Mr. Musafar can now make the most of it for the research of his own and the research institute he belongs to.

The result and comments by Former International student By the research guidance I/we got many information and ideas that support us or our Institute to plan our research in future especially research that related with the study of magnetic pulsations, precursor of earthquake and space weather by using ground-base magnetometer observation (MAGDAS/CPMN). The research guidance not only guide me to perform research in geomagnetism and space electromagnetism but also for young researchers in my institute/division.

<Study in Japan>

Research advisor's Impressions for the former International student while studying in Japan and communication after studying in Japan The impression I had of Mr. Musafar when he was studying at our university was that he was a quiet and diligent student. Perhaps it was because of the language barrier as well but it seemed to me that he was a student who would rather study alone than communicate with others. However, after returning home, he has played an important role to promote joint research as a liaison between the institute he belongs to in Indonesia and our laboratory in Japan. It has been a while since I saw him last, and it was a pleasant surprise for me to find him very confident and active as if he were a different person than he had been in Japan. I believe it indicates that he is now proud of himself for being able to process data by making use of the most advance IT technology by himself. In addition, he has a wish to be readmitted to Bandung Institute of Technology, as he is highly motivated to pursue a doctorate. I am fully confident that he is going to grow up amazingly as our co-researcher.

<Follow-up Research Guidance>

Period          February 10 ~ 18, 2008 (9days)
Institution          Tribhuvan University (Nepal)
Field of Research Guidance      International Community Health
Research instruction details and results Dr. Amod Kumar Poudyal has been surrounded by severe conditions since his return from Japan to Nepal because his research environment is far from idealistic. The infrastructure of his University is unstable, and all the computers in his laboratory are out of order. The only way for him to have access to the Internet is to use his own PC at home. Furthermore, under Maoist Insurgency since 1996, the actual number of staff has decreased drastically from 24 to 11 at the School of Community Medicine and Family Health which is the biggest department of the Faculty of Medicine he belongs to. As a result, he can hardly spend time on his own research due to the heavier teaching load than before. Under the circumstances, he has decided to choose evaluation of activities of an ophthalmology NGO as a subject of his study. Moreover, he was in charge of analyzing data on cigarette smoking, alcoholic intake and exercise habits for an NGO named SOLID Nepal (Society for Local Integrated Development Nepal). In the last fiscal year, funded by WHO and other organizations, SOLID Nepal conducted a fact-finding survey across the country in Nepal on lifestyle-related diseases. Thus, he and Dr. Khem Bdr. Karki, the director of SOLID Nepal, have agreed to work together on the subject and write a research paper.

The result and comments by Former International student I found the follow-up Research Guidance program was very useful. Firstly, it gave me an opportunity to interact face to face with my supervisor on various aspects (progress and problems) of researches. It helped me to improve my current research projects. Secondly, it enhanced my morale in my job and among my faculty members, as I felt that still I am being backed up with supervisors’ guidance. Finally, it gave the possibility of research linkage program between my university in Japan and here in Nepal.
Once in a 2-4 years, the follow up program should invite the former international students and conduct experience sharing and research presenting workshop.

<Study in Japan>

Research advisor's Impressions for the former International student while studying in Japan and communication after studying in Japan While Dr. Poudyal was studying in Japan for his doctorate, he concentrated on writing research papers and submitted eight papers which were accepted. One of them in particular was published in British Journal of Ophthalmology, a well-known medical journal in the field of ophthalmology. The article published in the journal got Dr. Poudyal to be invited to the World Ophthalmology Conference last year. However, only a half of his travel expense was supported so he had to give up participating in the conference. He couldn’t help but frustrated to think about the opportunity he was given but was not able to take. Since his return to his home country, we had been communicating with him in Nepal by email and had believed to have good understanding about the situation in the country, however we had to learn more by actually experiencing it by ourselves. During my visit to Nepal, the country was facing shortages of electricity and gasoline, and people suffered from power outage at any places including hotels every day. It is not at all easy to continue conducting research the same way as he did in Japan in a difficult situation where there are many problems not only with the infrastructure but also the research environment. We have become keenly aware that a follow-up program is indispensable for supporting and encouraging international students from such countries as Nepal whose living conditions and research conditions are yet to reach a satisfactory level.

<Follow-up Research Guidance>

Field of Research Guidance      Bacteriology
Research equipments 1) Small Sladge Microtome (ERMA ESM-150S)
2) Paraffin Spreading Apparatus (TAKASHIMA T-76)
Research instruction details and results It has become a global issue to produce secure and safe livestock products. Maejo University in Thailand is focused on training at production site and has courses which includes field tests on providing feedstuffs containing natural substances such as herbs. The issue for him was to enhance the research on the results of such tests conducted at the field not only by taking the nutritional physiologic approach but also through taking histological explanation of the intestinal tract into consideration. This time, he has been supplied a small sledge microtome and a paraffin flattening table which are indispensable for his histological study. Therefore, considering that another international student, Buaream Maneewan who completed her study at the same laboratory in Japan as himself, got an optical microscope with her when she went back, I believe that fruitful results will be attained through their tests and that a lot of papers and articles are expected to be published.

The result and comments by Former International student We discuss on the good points of importance subjects in order to improve the research. This follow-up research guidance is very good program in the case of discussions.

<Study in Japan>

Research advisor's Impressions for the former International student while studying in Japan and communication after studying in Japan Dr. Mongkol Samanya is an international student who never raises his voice at others but speaks softly with a warm smile on his face. His attitude toward his study is stable, and he always tries to find the way to increase poultry productivity from the bacteriological standpoint. At the laboratory (Professor Yamauchi's laboratory) he belonged to in Japan, his focus was on bacillus natto and wood charcoal·vinegar that are contained in traditional Japanese food. He identified the fact that the enteric environment of chickens is improved and their capability to grow is enhanced by feeding chickens on the feed containing those substances mentioned above. His research interest after returning home is in the immune mechanism, and he is trying to elucidate the mechanism by using enteric canal of shrimp for now. I am very pleased to have witnessed his giving instructions to a master’s student who is studying infected lobsters.

Five international students so far have completed their study in Japan in our laboratory and three international students are studying now. Ms. Buaream Maneewan is one of the five. It seems that she was already thinking about starting a new laboratory to study histology at Maejo University in Thailand when she was studying in Japan. In fact, she was appointed to take care of lectures on histology as soon as she returned home. Now that Mr. Mongkol Sammanya has been provided with a microtome and a paraffin flattening table, and Ms. Buaream Maneewan with a optical microscope, they a now capable of conducting thorough research on histology.

The result and comments by Former International student It’s good for former student and academic advisor to continue their research together.

<Study in Japan>

Research advisor's Impressions for the former International student while studying in Japan and communication after studying in Japan Dr. Buaream Maneewan is the only international student that has spent five years of study in Japan. She came to love Japanese culture, Japanese tea and Sashimi before returning home. Even though it was to use grainy formula feed to follow the conventional method of animal feeding trial, she identified the importance of protein to be contained in the forced molt feed by using semipurified diet. Moreover, whereas the research activities of other international students are centered around nutritional physiology after returning home as well, she has been concentrating on establishing the histological approach, and as the instruments that she has taken home this time has helped her dream come true, continued success and development are expected of her.

Research instruction details and results Research instructions were given to her to identify the relation between environmental factors (used a thermo recorder) and the growth process (used a digital camera) mainly around germination and resting in asparagus cultivation. For this research, she made a quantitative analysis between the two (used a laptop PC), as a result of which she attained new findings. The findings included that there could be a technique which would make it possible for the Mulch Cultivation method she had learned in Japan which is located in the temperate zone to be applied in Thailand in the tropical zone. The research result was likely to bring about an increase in yield and improvement in the quality of asparagus.

The result and comments by Former International student I would like to appreciate to JASSO for donation of scientific equipments and providing a research guidance from specialists. Since my faculty at Udon Thani Rajabhat University was newly established, our department is in dire need of equipment for research and instruction purposes. The assistance of Monbushou affiliated group by providing this scientific equipments are very useful for us to develop our research in the future.

<Study in Japan>

Research advisor's Impressions for the former International student while studying in Japan and communication after studying in Japan When she was studying in Japan, because her research theme was related with multiple research areas other than her own, she was always making an extraordinary effort. She had an excellent attitude toward her research. Furthermore, she was also active in communicating and exchanging opinions with other international and Japanese students in her everyday life. After returning home, she was in contact with us (Professor Suzuki and Professor Matsui) using email and letters. Two years ago, she visited Japan for the first time since she had gone back, called on her instructors to exchange ideas on her research and was given instructions.

<Follow-up Research Guidance>

Period          September 10 ~ 18, 2007 (9days)
Institution          Beijing Normal University Institute of Economic and ResourceManagement (P.R. China)
Field of Research Guidance      System of National Accounts (Input-Output Analysis)
Research equipments 1) Lap top PC (Panasonic CF-W5AWDPJR)
2) Digital video camera (Victor GZ-MG575)
3) Excel statistics compiling software 2006 for windows (Japanese)
Research instruction details and results Prior to the visit this time, Dr. Jin Ji Hong had preparatory meetings with authorities such as the Institute for Economic and Resource Management, Beijing Normal University, National Bureau of Statistics of China and Beijing Municipal Bureau of Statistics. Therefore, I could make the most of the nine-day visit to give her research instruction, and she could achieve significant results.

First, as regard the hearing investigation on “the Economic Ripple Effects of Beijing Olympics” which was actually the theme of instruction this time, she interviewed personnel working at National Bureau of Statistics of China and Beijing Municipal Bureau of Statistics on the process of generating the latest input-output tables and on the study conducted by National Bureau about economic effect measurements of Beijing Olympics. It really was a great achievement that she could have been provided with the latest input-output tables of the whole nation for 2005 and with the information about their attached table, Employment Table, as well.

Second, concerning the investigation visits to the Olympic facilities, she paid visits to the major facilities including the National Aquatics Center (NAC), nicknamed the "Water Cube", Beijing National Stadium, the “Bird’s Nest,” which is the main stadium of Beijing Olympic Games, and the athlete's village in addition to the civil infrastructure such as the airport and the construction site of subway which connects the airport and the city center. She recorded all the places that she visited with her digital video camera and transmitted the video recordings to her PC at university based on my instruction so that the recorded information can be complied as a database for different search such as visited places and/or investigative organizations.

Third, on the method of numerical calculation for the input-output analysis, I gave her a training class using PC provided to her and statistics software on the PC. It was a good opportunity for me to lecture on a large-scale inverse matrix program utilizing VBA(Visual Basic Application) and the way to use the program, and on a method of matrix operation using statistics software by referring to the specific data (780 rows×780 columns) in international input-output tables. I think it worthwhile to point out that the PC provided to her played a considerable role because she could improve her technique of processing digital contents through using digital video camera and PC for her research.

The result and comments by Former International student Let me please extend my heartfelt gratitude to you, because, thanks to the support of this program, I was able to receive research instruction on the latest information about community planning and input-output analysis, the method of fieldwork related with regional development, so on and so forth. I am very thankful that you have provided me through this program with the tools such as PC and statistics software for input-output analysis and I am sure this will help me improve my research capability in the days ahead. Furthermore, you have given me enough time and opportunity to receive the instruction this time, and I have been able to achieve considerable results.
I sincerely hope that you are going to continue providing us with research exchange opportunities like this from now on too.

<Study in Japan>

Research advisor's Impressions for the former International student while studying in Japan and communication after studying in Japan Dr. Jin was very diligent and keen on learning when she was studying in Japan before and she retained an ardent passion for learning after going back as well, so I have been very much impressed with her attitude. Through the research exchange program this time, I was given opportunities to give lectures and training classes at the graduate school she belongs to. I was very pleased to see that Ms. Jin was such a good teacher for her students and was also a good researcher who was well trusted by the director of the institute and her colleagues. Moreover, as Beijing Normal University and Yokohama National University have Academic Exchange Agreement, one of her students is going to study at the graduate school of our university as an exchange student from April. Therefore it is highly expected that the academic exchange activities between us are going to be even more fulfilling in the future.

Research instruction details and results With Dr. Thanh to whom I provided a research guidance having worked hard and Prof. Nhuong, who was a research collaborator, having provided various supports during our field researches, the program produced excellent results. We were fortunate to find a habitat of Psuedogelasimus loii which is a rare crab, fulfilling our purpose of the guidance. We were also able to make best use of the video camera we brought to record the behavior of the crab, another purpose of our visit. Results of field researches helped to provide base of an interesting topic which is to clarify ecological and behavioral characteristics of the rare crab that is endemic to Vietnam.
The result and comments by Former International student Thanks to the Follow-up Research Guidance, I could brush up my research skill of behavioral ecology of intertidal crabs. The research equipment, a video camera brought by Prof. Wada, was a very useful at the field research and will be used in the following field research continued by me. The research guidance by Prof. Wada was excellent. I hope that the length of visit by Prof. Wada should have been a little longer.

<Study in Japan>

Research advisor's Impressions for the former International student while studying in Japan and communication after studying in Japan At present, Dr. Thanh is a lecturer of biology at the Hanoi National University of Education, although her areas of expertise are molecular biology and genetics. While studying in Japan, she earned degrees in ecology and ethology, her current research activities do not involve either of her expertise. As a result, it is regrettable to say, she is unable to leverage her research in her country. During the research guidance, I was able to provide her with opportunities to research ecology and ethology, her realms of expertise, and I could see she found it very significant. We have exchanged e-mails since she returned to Vietnam until her research paper was accepted by an international journal, but no research exchange was carried out after the paper was published. The program gave us the precious opportunity to resume our research exchange.

Research instruction details and results As for Dr. Shi Hui, her doctorial dissertation translated into Chinese from the original Japanese has become more precise under this research guidance. It is now ready for publication within the year. She pursued a new research topic, a comparative study of the disposition lexicon of both Chinese and Japanese languages. It is expected that under the guidance, she will have a better understanding of her research objective, meaning, method, and other relevant matters as she strives to attain her research goal.

As for Dr. Chang Zhibin, during the process of this research guidance his doctorial dissertation translated into Chinese from the original Japanese has become more precise. It is now nearly ready for publication. He pursued a new research topic, new words of both Chinese and Japanese. Under the guidance, the research objective, its significance and methods, and other relevant matters became clearer and more concrete to the researcher. Further guidance was given on research methods and other relevant matters after I explained the importance of research on “regional Chinese,” a localized Chinese language formed in various parts of the world. As a result, it can be said that his research range has widened.

Students’ response to the lectures was highly positive. In fact, an extra lecture was added to the initially planned ones. The Students’ serious and enthusiastic attitude toward their studies was highly impressive.

The presidents of both universities we visited expressed their great appreciation for JASSO Follow-up Research Guidance for international students who have returned home, saying that the guidance was helpful not only to former international students, but also for education and research activities at the universities. The presidents also hoped that the guidance would continue. As research papers and materials on the Japanese language and Japan had been scant and dated at these universities, the presidents and other faculty members were truly grateful for the donation of updated research materials. We are convinced that these new materials will be of tangible help to future studies on Japanese education and research.
The result and comments by Former International student (Opinion of Associate Prof. Shi Hui)
Details of research guidance are divided into three areas.
1. The doctorial dissertation translated into Chinese from the original Japanese has become more precise under this research guidance.
2. Under the guidance, I was able to solve problems and questions about education and research activities that I had had since I returned from Japan.
3. Guidance was given on the development and selection of future research topics, and on research meanings and methods, and discussions were held on textbooks to be used in Japanese education in China.

(Opinion of instructor Chang Zhibin)

My doctorial dissertation translated into Chinese from the original Japanese has become more precise under this research guidance. It is now nearly ready for publication. Under the guidance on a new research topic, a new language in both Chinese and Japanese, I was able to have a clearer idea about the research objective, meaning, method, and other relevant matters for the research. Further, guidance was given on how to handle the “regional Chinese,” a localized Chinese language formed in various parts of the world and on its relationship with the mainland Chinese. As a result, the range of my research has widened.

<Study in Japan>

Research advisor's Impressions for the former International student while studying in Japan and communication after studying in Japan Both Dr. Chang Zhibin and Dr. Shi Hui immersed themselves in studies and research at Hiroshima City University while they were in Japan. Their studiousness was highly appreciated by faculty members and their fellow students. After their return to China, they pursued education and research in a greater intensity, playing core roles in their departments. They are also making serious contributions to exchanges between Hiroshima City University and Soochow University and Shanghai Daxue, which helped make the students’ China study tour a fruitful one.

After Dr. Chang Zhibin and Dr. Shi Hui went home, they had several questions and encountered difficulties regarding thier Japanese study and Japanese education at its teaching places. For their problems, I try to answer them and give necessary guidance by e-mail. I also encourage them to present their papers at various societies in China and abroad, while checking their details and making necessary corrections. Further, I send them the latest information about the Japanese language, new research methods and some results on a regular basis. I have also made proposals and given advice on the selection of research topics that have a better chance of winning outside funds. I intend to continue the exchanges of this kind as much as I can.

Research instruction details and results Mr. Bim Prasad Shrestha obtained his doctorate in agriculture in Japan and went on to spend two years as a researcher at Michigan State University. After returning home, he has been involved in the education and research of image information science at Kathmandu University. The equipment we brought with me this time, such as notebook personal computers, CCD cameras, image pick-up software, and hardware disks, were received gladly as these devices could be useful in taking measurements that their current equipment is unable to perform.
During our stay in Kathmandu, we provided instructions on the use of image-processing equipment and collection and analysis of image data. As their researches into the inspection of floating matters in the river and sorting of agricultural products are still continuing, expectations are high for its future expansion as a unique study in the field of image measurement.
My other activities included participation in a student seminar, discussions with vice chancellor, dean and other faculty members, and consultation with students wishing to study in Japan. As it was the first time for Kathmandu University to officially launch JASSO Follow-up Research Guidance for international students who have returned home, the reception mood was buoyant. As many as 20 people including the secretary general and the head of the engineering department attended the ceremony to hand over the equipment we brought to the university. It was nice to see the high appreciation for JASSO’s support for international student programs. It was great that we were able to pull off this 4th research guidance based on our experiences in the past three occasions in 1994, 1995, and 2000. We are truly grateful to former AIEJ and JASSO staff for their help.

The result and comments by Former International student It is my great pleasure to have learnt the latest state of the art technology in the field of image processing and its application for food quality estimation from my Japanese Professor Masateru Nagata. The visit of my professor for my follow up research guidance has greatly helped me to learn the use of latest image processing technique that I have started working at my laboratory in Kathmandu University.
I have learnt to capture images of biological and non biological materials in multi spectral mode from my professor. He has demonstrated to use and handed over the equipments and facilities that I received from JASSO to my laboratory. These facilities will help me a lot to further carry on the research work in my home country. The lectures delivered by Prof. Nagata on use of hyper spectral image processing for quality estimation of strawberry has been great learning for me, my students and other faculty members at Kathmandu University. I have had an opportunity to learn the latest technology and research work that my professor has been doing in his laboratory after my graduation from Japan.
Besides that, the follow up guidance has boosted my confidence to further continue research in the field of image processing for quality estimation. This was a really excellent follow-up program that helps former international students in Japan to exchange new technique and technology and to keep in touch with the previous studies and academic advisors.

<Study in Japan>

Research advisor's Impressions for the former International student while studying in Japan and communication after studying in Japan Mr. Bim Shrestha obtained his master and doctoral degrees during his 5-year stay in Miyazaki University. He was amazingly fast in learning Japanese, as he had many Japanese friends due to his outgoing and kind nature. It goes without saying that this ability to make friends has had a beneficial impact on his subsequent studies and research, and to obtain master and doctoral degrees in agriculture. He also headed an association of students at the university, which organized a group of international students and lead activities to promote international exchanges at the school and in neighbor areas. After his return to Nepal, he developed a research laboratory on image processing and education at Kathmandu University based on his experiences in Japan and the U.S. where he pursued post-doctoral studies. He still keeps in touch with us and his teacher at Michigan State University, thus all three parties have mutual relationship, and he sends us samples from Nepal that we analyze.
In his home country, he strives to improve the image inspection technology, producing results that are highly appreciated. He also serves as an official (former secretary general, current vice president) of the Japan-Nepal international students’ association (JUSAN), promoting friendship and exchange between Japan and Nepal. It is hoped that we can continually provide support so that those international students who have returned to Nepal can convey the value of studying in Japan to other students and acquaintances through research and local activities.
