10. Overview
This was the sixth Japan Education Fair to be held in Taiwan since the first one in 1993, and was the third consecutive gathering since 2000.
Following the destruction caused by an earthquake in 1999 and a typhoon in 2001, Taiwan suffered an island-wide water shortage for several months this year, but restrictions on water usage were lifted right before the fair started, and the shortage had no noticeable impact on the running of the fair. It rained on the first day, while the second day was sunny, but the weather did not affect the constant stream of visitors to the fair. A total of 2,549 visitors attended the fair, an increase of nearly 500 over last year's turnout.
The fair in Taiwan traditionally seen a heavy turnout of visitors with definite intentions to study in Japan, and there was an even greater number of persons who did preparatory research prior to the fair and then engaged in in-depth consultation with the booth representatives-a development that may be attributed to the fact that the fair has now been held for three consecutive years. The break area was noticeably filled with visitors keenly pouring over materials handed out at the fair, such as the booth guides and "Student Guide to Japan" pamphlets received upon arrival, and the school handbooks and application guidelines distributed at the booths.
Orientation sessions were held twice on each day, and more than 80% of the seats were filled on both days. At the end of each session, the panelists were surrounded by a throng of visitors eager to ask more questions.
As the Examination for Japanese University Admission was administered for the first time this year, there were countless inquiries on its content and the related changes in entrance examination procedures. It is desirable to improve the provision of information on study in Japan to aid the growing number of Taiwan citizens interested in studying in Japan.
