Residence Hall Entrance Guide

1. Composition of residents to be accepted (planned)

International students: about 60 percent of the total
Japanese students: about 30 percent of the total
Researchers: about 10 percent of the total

2. Qualification for residence

In the event of any conflict between the Japanese and English versions, the Japanese version shall prevail.

International students

International students must have "student" status of residence, must be able to commute from the TIEC to the universities, and must meet one of the following conditions. The residence period at the TIEC shall be 30 days or more.

Japanese students

Japanese students (include students who have “permanent resident” or “special permanent resident” status of residence) must be able to commute from the TIEC to the universities and must meet all the following conditions. The residence period at the TIEC shall be 30 days or more.

Researchers

Foreign researchers

Outstanding foreign researchers who register to Japanese universities or research institutes, have “professor”, “researcher”, “cultural activities” “Highly Skilled Professional (i) (a) ” ,or ”Highly Skilled Professional (ii)(foreign researchers who are engaged in the activity of (a))” status of residence, can commute from the TIEC to the universities or institutes and hold a doctoral degree awarded in less than 8 years at the time of application. (Excluding full-time staff of a university or research institute) The residence period at the TIEC shall be over 30 days or more.

Japanese researchers

Outstanding Japanese researchers (include researchers who have “permanent resident” or “special permanent resident” status of residence) who register to Japanese universities or research institutes and hold a doctoral degree awarded in less than 8 years at the time of application. (Excluding full-time staff of a university or research institute) The residence period at the TIEC shall be 30 days or more.

3. Period of Residence

【International students and Japanese students】

The maximum period of residence shall be 3 years within the term of study. (include the period of residence in the past)

【Researchers】

The maximum period of residence shall be 3 years within the enrollment period. Researchers can reapply and the maximum period of residence shall be 3 years within the enrollment period. (the maximum period of residence shall be 6 years in total and include the period of residence in the past)

※Hall C,D residents, an accompanying family’s period of residence in the past also includes applicant’s period of residence and the longer period is applied. The period of residence in the past as an applicant’s child excludes applicant’s period of residence.

4. Rent and other expenses

Entrance fee

Additional payment of one month’s rent as an entrance fee (non-returnable) is required.

Utility fees

Residents must pay for their actual expenses (include the designated handling fee by TIEC Administration Office).

5. Admission method

The recruitment of residents is notified to Japanese universities and research institutes and posted on JASSO website.

6. Procedure of application

Applicants submit required documents and application forms through their host universities / institutes.
Direct application to TIEC is not acceptable.
