[From the Editor]
(1) Somewhere spring is born
Somewhere a stream flows
(2) Somewhere a lark sings
Somewhere a sprout rings
(3) March, a soft mountain wind blows
Somewhere spring is born
This is a nursery song I learned in childhood.
March is called yayoi in the Japanese lunar calendar. It is written with two kanji, iya, which means “at last” or “increasingly,” and oi, which expresses “healthy growth.” The combination has evolved to represent the month plants gradually come into bud – March.
Somewhere snow is melting, slowly descending the mountain, and flowing into a brook, bearing new life in its journey. Though we may not notice all this, March does hint at a breath of spring.
One parting leads to the next encounter, and new ties are born. Spring reminds me of the sweet-sour memories of graduation even decades after I’ve been in school.
Winning the Winter Olympics medal made some athletes cry and some athletes smile. Those of you to whom spring means graduation, a new university, or a new job, I wish you the best in aiming for your unique gold medal.
