[From the Editor]
The “stationmaster” at Kishi Station on the Wakayama Electric Railway Co. Ltd.’s line is popular among tourists and local people. Its name is “Tama,” a calico cat who has been appointed to the post by the railway company’s president. This appointment saved the cat from being evicted from the station. This local line was on the brink of abolishment, but, thanks to Tama’s popularity, the number of passengers increased by about 55,000 in the past year from the previous year. With the sales of Tama’s photos and goods, the economic effects from Tama’s presence are said to total 1.1 billion yen. Tama the stationmaster is indeed a lucky charm. The cat also drew the interest of overseas media; she is set to appear in a French movie next month. As the cold winter approaches, Tama the stationmaster is a heart-warming story.
