  • Summary: For the purpose of promoting Japanese studies overseas, this program provides support to preeminent foreign scholars in Japanese studies to give them an opportunity to conduct research in Japan. However,experts in the fields of the natural sciences, medicine, and engineering are excluded.

Atsumi International Scholarship Foundation (AISF)

Atsumi Scholarship

  • Summary: Atsumi International Scholarship Foundation (AISF) offers scholarship to Ph.D candidates enrolled in the graduate schools located in the Kanto area in Japan.

    *Eligibility requirements (All the following conditions must be satisfied).
    1. A student with non-Japanese nationality who is enrolled in a graduate school in the Kanto area, and who is expecting to obtain his/her Ph. D. within the term of the AISF scholarship. This includes those who are enrolled in graduate school as researchers because of their going over the required period as a regular student, or because of their obtaining their Ph.D. from a graduate school outside of Japan.
    2. A student whose graduate school (or laboratory) and place of residence are in the Kanto area (Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama , Chiba, Ibaraki, Tochigi, and Gunma Prefectures)
    3. A student who is interested in international understanding and friendship, and willing to participate in AISF sponsored activities.
    4. Japanese language fluency is required as all the selection documents and interviews are only in Japanese.

 

 

 

SGRA

  • Short for Sekiguchi Global Research Association (pronounced as SEGRA). SGRA is formed from a core of former foreign students who have stayed long in Japan and obtained their doctoral degrees from Japanese universities. SGRA undertakes research and policy recommendations that could be useful to individuals or organizations coping with globalization, the results of which are presented in forums, published reports, and the internet. Multinational and multi-disciplinary teams are formed around certain research themes, and undertake analysis based on a wide knowledge base, network, and data. SGRA aims to be broad in scope and avoids limiting research to a specialized field. SGRA aims to work towards the achievement of good global citizenship which would contribute to global peace and the enrichment of humanity. Although only in Japanese, twice-a-week email newsletter “SGRA Kawaraban” is available for free (registration at http://www.aisf.or.jp/sgra/).

The Japan-United States Educational Commission (JUSEC) (Fulbright Program)

Fulbright Grants for Americans

  • Summary: Approximately 50 to 60 Americans are selected each year in the categories listed below.Grants to Americans are usually all-expense grants ranging from 3 to 12 months.

 

  • 1. Lecturing Program
    (10 months; one term possible)
    For lecturing in undergraduate and graduate courses in a social science and humanities field related to the American experience.
  • 2. Lecturing/Research Program
    (10 months; one term possible)
    For lecturing in undergraduate and graduate courses and conducting research in any field.
  • 3. Research Program
    (3 to 9 months)
    For research in any field.
  • 4. Graduate Research Fellows Program
    (12 months)
    For graduate students at dissertation level or in terminal master's programs to conduct research towards earning a degree in the social sciences and humanities.
  • 5. Fulbright Fellows Program
    (12 months)
    For recent graduates with a bachelors degree to be introduced to different regions of Japan while they pursue language study and research at local universities and institutions outside of Tokyo area. This grant category has benefited greatly over the years from private sector funding.
  • 6. International Education Administrators Program
    (Short term group program-3 weeks)
    For international education administrators with higher education, to become familiar with the society and culture of Japan. The program consists of briefings, campus visits, appointments with selected government officials, cultural activities and other activities.

Essay Contest

The Society of International Educational and Cultural Exchange (SIENCE) announces an essay contest in commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the “World Youth Conference”.

The Hitachi Scholarship

  • Summary: Scholarship Program for Postgraduate Study in Japan
    The Hitachi Scholarship provides an excellent opportunity for Southeast Asian universities, as a part of their human development programs, to send to Japan their faculty members who wish to continue teaching and research at their universities after graduation.

 

The Hitachi Research Fellowship

  • Summary: Research Fellowship Program for Postdoctoral Research in Japan
    The Foundation provides Ph.D. holding faculty members with opportunities to enhance their academic credentials by visiting research collaborators in Japan to conduct research in science and technology at Japanese universities and research institutes. There are short-term programs (less than three months) and long-term programs (six to twelve months), depending on the need.

 

The Komai Fellowship

  • Summary: Fellowship Program for Specific Research in Japanese Studies
    The Komai Fellowship Program was inaugurated under the auspices of the late Kenichiro Komai, the first chairman of the Hitachi Scholarship Foundation, to encourage academic interaction between Southeast Asian countries and Japan in the fields of social science and cultural studies.

 

Research Grant and Graduate Support

  • Summary: Funds for Joint Research in the Natural and Social Sciences
    The Hitachi Research Grant was announced in 1985 by the Hitachi Scholarship Foundation to subsidize joint research projects in the natural sciences, humanities and social sciences and to encourage and motivate collaborative research activities between university faculty in Southeast Asia and their Japanese counterparts. Since 1988, the focus of this program has been shifted to the support of various research-related activities by ex-fellows from the Hitachi Scholarship or the Hitachi Research Fellowship programs.
