TIEC International Symposium 2011

1.Title of the Symposium

“The Coming Smart Society and Advanced Science & Technology - Overcoming 3.11 -”

2.Overview

In the 20th century, social systems were developed to provide prosperous and comfortable lives. Those systems are now facing a serious crisis caused by natural disasters, food-supply crises, and health hazards, all of which could be a result of mass energy consumption. After the Great East Japan Earthquake on 3.11, Japan is experiencing serious energy problems.
At this critical moment in time, the term "smart society" has been gaining attention. In a smart society, all processes involved in energy production to energy consumption are fundamentally re-examined. A "smart society" attempts to re-establish the social system through a diversification of energy sources, optimization of transmission and distribution, and a development of energy-efficient equipment to improve consumption efficiency.
This symposium invites two main speakers, Dr. Daniel Kammen (Distinguished Professor, University of California, Berkley) who is one of the leading researchers of renewable energy in the U.S., and Dr. Tech Seng Low (Managing Director, Agency for Science Technology and Research A*STAR) who is a leading expert in advanced science technology research in ASEAN region. Together, along with other guest speakers, we examine the future possibility of a smart society, and the science technologies needed to achieve it.
