Overview of the Program
Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately-Financed International Students is awarded to privately-financed international students with excellent academic and character records who have received pre-arrival admission in a graduate school, undergraduate school, junior college, college of technology (3rd grade or upper) or specialized course in a specialized training college in Japan and are facing financial difficulties. The objectives of the reservation program are to contribute to ease their financial concerns about arrival and studies in Japan, promote pre-arrival admission and improve the level of learning.
(1) Definition of pre-arrival admission
Pre-arrival admission is a program through which international students can directly apply for admission from overseas. Selection is carried out and permission for admission is granted to the candidates without requiring them to come to Japan even once before enrollment.
(2) Monthly stipend
48,000 yen per month *The amount may change from one academic year to another.
(3) Scholarship period
- For students enrolled in April
- 12 months (From April in the year of enrollment to next March)
- For students enrolled in September or October
- 6 months (From October in the year of enrollment to next March)
(4) Method of application
Please ask school you plan to enroll in. We do not accept applications directly from students.
To receive the scholarship, the applicant must complete the procedure through your school.

- *As for the reservation category "EJU exam", JASSO uses the list as of October 1, 2023 for enrollment in spring and the list as of April 1, 2024 for enrollment in September or October, which do not necessarily equal to the list below.

Graduate level
Privately-financed international student who plans to enroll as a full-time student (*) in a graduate school in Japan in April (September or October for autumn enrollment) using pre-arrival admission
EJU exam or English courses
Privately-financed international student who plans to enroll as a full-time student (*) in an undergraduate school, junior college, college of technology (3rd grade or upper) or specialized course in specialized training college in Japan in April (September or October for autumn enrollment) using pre-arrival admission.
- *“Full-time student” under this program does not include research students, trainees, non-degree students, advanced course students, special course students, auditing students and special students among others.
- *To receive the scholarship, the candidate must complete the procedure through your school.
