Reservation Program for Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately-Financed International Students by Pre-arrival Admission
Overview of the Program
The Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately-Financed International Students is awarded to privately-financed international students with excellent academic and character records who have received pre-arrival admission in a graduate school, undergraduate school, junior college, college of technology (3rd year or higher) or specialized course in a specialized training college in Japan and are facing financial difficulties. The objective of the reservation program is to contribute toward easing their financial concerns about arrival and studies in Japan, promoting pre-arrival admission and improving the level of learning.
(1) Definition of pre-arrival admission
Pre-arrival admission is a program through which international students can directly apply for admission from overseas. Selection is carried out and permission for admission is granted to the candidates without requiring them to come to Japan even once before enrollment.
(2) Monthly stipend
The monthly stipend specified for the academic year for which the candidate is to receive the scholarship.
(The monthly stipend for 2020-2021 are 48,000 yen for graduate as well as undergraduate levels. The amount may change from one academic year to another.)
(3) Scholarship period
The scholarship is provided on monthly basis.
Spring scholarships (enrollment in April): 12 months (From April in the year of selection to next March)
Autumn scholarships (enrollment in September/October): 6 months (From October in the year of selection to next March)
(4) Method of application
Apply through the educational institution you plan to join. We do not accept applications directly from students.

(5) Eligibility
Graduate level
Privately-financed international student who plans to enroll as full-time student (Note 1) in a graduate school in Japan in April (September or October for autumn scholarship) using pre-arrival admission
EJU exam or English courses
Privately-financed international student who plans to enroll as full-time student (Note 1) in an undergraduate school, junior college, college of technology (3rd year or higher) or specialized course in specialized training college in Japan in April (September or October for autumn scholarship) using pre-arrival admission (or pre-arrival admission based on EJU)
(Note 1) “Full-time student” under this program does not include research students, trainees, non-degree students, advanced course students, special course students, auditing students and special students among others.
(Note 2) To receive the scholarship, the candidate must complete the procedure specified in (9) Selection of recipients.
(6) Schedule
Common for spring and autumn
Late October : Notice of invitation of applications (from JASSO to educational institutions)
Spring
Early December : Application for the program (from educational institutions to JASSO)
Late January : Notice of possible recommendations per category (from JASSO to educational institutions)
Mid February : Submission of potential number of recommendations per category (from educational institutions to JASSO)
Late March : Notice of requested number of recommendations per category (from JASSO to educational institutions)
Early April : Enrollment of reserved candidates
Mid May : Application for scholarship (enter data in the system)
Mid June : Notice of selection results
Mid July : First transfer of monthly stipend (for April to June)
Autumn
Early June : Application for the program (from educational institutions to JASSO)
End of June : Notice of possible recommendations per category (from JASSO to educational institutions)
Early August : Submission of potential number of recommendations per category (from educational institutions to JASSO)
End of August : Notice of requested number of recommendations per category (from JASSO to educational institutions)
September or Early October : Enrollment of reserved candidates
Early October : Application for scholarship (enter data in the system)
Early November : Notice of selection results
Mid November : First transfer of monthly stipend (for October)
(7) Offer of reservation and cancellation of offer
The Head of each educational institution will select candidates for each reservation category under this program from all students expected to enroll using pre-arrival admission within the possible number of recommendations per category and send them an offer.
However, the offer of reservation may be canceled in any of the cases mentioned below. The student cannot receive scholarship in the reservation category under this program if the offer is canceled.
- 1.If the information provided in the submitted documents is found to be false, or incorrect due to serious negligence.
- 2.If the recipient of the offer does not enroll in April (September/October for autumn scholarship).
- 3.If the recipient of the offer does not enroll using a pre-arrival admission applicable to this reservation program.
- 4.Any other reason that disqualifies the recipient for the offer of reservation.
(8) Conditions for receiving scholarship
To receive the scholarship, the reserved candidate must satisfy all the conditions specified in the 2021 Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately-Financed International Students Guidelines or 2021 Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately-Financed International Students Guidelines (6-month scholarship).
(9) Selection of recipients
The Head of the educational institution in which the reserved candidate is enrolled should recommend the candidate based on the 2021 Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately-Financed International Students Guidelines or 2021 Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately-Financed International Students Guidelines (6-month scholarship). Recommended candidates from each educational institution will be selected for the scholarship after a consultation with the Committee for Monbukagakusho Honors Scholarship for Privately-Financed International Students in JASSO.
