Use of EJU Scores by Universities and other Schools

Q. What is meant by “using EJU” by Japanese universities and other schools?

A. “Using EJU” refers to the use by Japanese universities of EJU scores in their screening of international students for admission. More specifically, Japanese universities contact JASSO to learn the EJU scores of individuals seeking admission to their schools, and utilize those scores as selection references.
Please be aware, however, some institutions don’t rely only on EJU scores but also use its own entrance exam and/or an interview to decide whether to admit an applicant. In view of this, you are advised to confirm in advance the admissions screening processes adopted at the specific schools that you wish to attend.

Q. Do I need to pass the EJU for admission to Japanese universities?

A. The EJU is not an exam used to determine whether applicants are accepted or rejected.
EJU results are expressed as scores, and primarily used by schools to evaluate the Japanese language skills and basic knowledge of candidates applying for admission.

Q. Is it absolutely necessary to take the EJU for admission to Japanese universities?

A. Each university determines whether it will use the EJU in its own entrance selection process. Please refer to the following page for information on universities which do use the EJU in their entrance examinations.
Remember, however, that the EJU may also be used at universities not included in this list. It is important, therefore, for you to directly contact the universities you wish to attend to confirm if the EJU is required to apply. If required, also directly clarify the specific test subjects, the language in which the questions will be asked and other details with the school of choice.

Q. What is the meaning of statements such as “TOEFL or other English proficiency tests required” in the list of schools using the EJU?

A. Because the EJU contains no sections to test English proficiency, Japanese schools may require applicants to take the school’s own independent English examination, or submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or similar exams.
Therefore, “TOEFL or other English proficiency tests required” refers to the possible need for applicants to submit scores from TOEFL, IELTS (International English Language Testing System) or other similar English language proficiency tests. Applicants should directly confirm which tests are required with their schools of choice.

Q. Are there any Japanese universities or other schools that do not require applicants to take the EJU as part of their admissions process?

A. Yes, there are certain universities (undergraduate programs), graduate schools and junior colleges that do not use the EJU. For this information, please refer to the following “Study in Japan Information Website” search system.
