The Examination for Japanese University Admission for International Students (EJU) gives international students the opportunity to take one of the tests required to apply for admission to study in Japan. The EJU is offered twice annually, and students’ scores are valid for two years. Because of this, applicants who take the EJU more than once can submit the test results with the highest score from among the test sessions specified for consideration by the desired university or other such higher educational institutions. The EJU is offered in Japan and 14 other countries/regions, and in light of the differing time zones of the various examination locations, the test questions are different for each. Since the specific questions vary from location to location, the level of difficulty will also vary, no matter how much preparation is put into making all the examinations as similar as possible. To deal with this, the EJU uses score equalization, which applies the fundamentals of the “item response theory” being used to good effect in large-scale examinations in the US and Europe. The test results are expressed as “scaled scores” whereby a common scale is applied to all examinees’ results, which makes it possible to meaningfully compare the results earned on examinations given at different sessions or with different questions.

Please note that the “Writing” section of the test of Japanese as a Foreign Language is not given a scaled score, and is instead graded based on separate grading standards. The grading standards rank the written responses in different levels based on how well the examinee has been able to deal with the given topic, and also assign a corresponding number of points that is used as the score reported.
